MEMPHIS INFORMATION

Located along the Mississippi River, Memphis is the largest city in the State of Tennessee and the 17th largest city in the country. It was found in 1820 and named after the ancient capital of Egypt. The city grew over time because of its river trade and railroad connections. Memphis has become famous for its African American music that includes gospel, jazz and blues. It is also known for its food, most notably, Memphis barbeque. Every May, the city host the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest. The FedEx Corporation and Autozone have their headquarters in the city. Memphis is home to one professional sports franchise, the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies that play at the FedEx Forum.

ATTRACTIONS AROUND MEMPHIS

-Graceland: Home of Elvis Presley, "The King of Rock and Roll". This is the number one tourist attraction in Memphis. Think "tacky tourist" trap but don't miss it--you might be pleasantly surprised.

-Beale Street: "Home of the Blues". Dozens of bars and clubs, most of them featuring live music. At night the street is closed to vehicles and you can drink on the street.

-Memphis Rock n Soul Museum: The museum used to be housed in the Gibson guitar factory across the street, which puts visitors right on the factory floor.
